After a long, sweaty training session, Aqua wandered through the castle, taking her time returning to her quarters. However, a delicious smell distracted her as she passed the kitchen. Considering that delicious smells were usually her creation, this caught her entirely off guard.

She opened the wooden kitchen door and blinked, stunned.

“Terra?”

Her friend was bent over, pulling what appeared to be a metal tray out of the oven, thick oven mitts cushioning his hands. Frowning in concentration, he set the tray on top of the oven and scraped at the surface with a knife.

“What are you doing?” She asked, arms crossed, enjoying the novelty of the sight before her.

Terra jumped, clearly not expected company, and looked at her.

“Hi,” he said sheepishly, before nodding at the tray below him. “I thought you’d probably go back to your room after training, so… this was supposed to be a surprise.”

Now she felt silly for being nosey, and she lowered her head in embarrassment. “Ah, sorry,” she said, feeling guilty for poking into the kitchen. “It just smelled so good, I had to know who was baking in here.”

Terra nodded in understanding. He hesitated, considering what to say. Then, after a moment: “You’re always making sweets.” He shrugged. “Figured it couldn’t be that hard.”

She peered around him at the tray still sitting on the oven, obscured behind Terra’s broad shoulder. “What did you make?”

He smiled softly and shooed her out of the kitchen. “You’ll find out tomorrow once it cools.” He shook his head. “I’ll throw it away first if it’s awful.”

She put her hand on his shoulder, nodding encouragingly. “It’s you, Terra. I’m sure you did a great job.” For a moment, they looked into each other’s eyes. Then she went to her room and left him to his task.

The following day, Terra came to find her as she shoveled snow off the path outside the castle.

He trudged up to her, lowering the scarf over his mouth to speak.

She raised an eyebrow, searching his face with her eyes. “How’d you do?” She asked.

His blue eyes sparkled in triumph. “Come see for yourself,” he said, gently taking the shovel from her hands. She hurried after him into the castle, excited to try something baked by Terra. This had never happened before, and she couldn’t help her curiosity.

Inside one of the castle’s sitting rooms, Ven and Master Eraqus sipped on mugs of hot tea in front of a cozy fireplace.

Ven jumped up in excitement as soon as Terra and Aqua entered.

“Aqua!” Ven exclaimed. “Can you really believe that Terra made this for all of us?” He pointed at a festive ceramic plate piled with -

“Chocolates?” Aqua asked, examining the little chocolate Christmas trees and snowmen.

She grinned and nudged Terra with her elbow. “I’m surprised, since you don’t like sweets.”

A faint pink patch appeared across Terra’s cheeks. “I made them less sweet, so I hope they’re all right.”

Master Eraqus spoke up, helping himself to a snowman. “You worked hard to do something new, Terra. That alone is a gift.” He bit into a corner experimentally. A bit nervous, Aqua thought, feeling a little bad for Terra. She knew how much effort he must have put into this, having to find cookbooks in the library since he had never baked before.

Master Eraqus chewed for a moment, and then gave Terra a pleased smile. “Delicious! Not too sweet but not too bitter. You did well.”

Terra didn’t say anything, but he snuck a happy glance at Aqua, before ducking his head and bowing. “Thank you, Master,” he said.

“You don’t need to tell me twice! Let’s dig in!” Ven exclaimed, grabbing a smaller plate and taking a few of each shape.

But Terra’s gaze remained on Aqua as she bit into a chocolate tree, face hopeful.

“Terra,” she said in wonder. “I think you found your new calling.”

Laughter rang in the castle as they all enjoyed the fruits of Terra’s labors.
