The opportunity was too perfect. Brain had his back to me, tracking the footprints across the snow for the direction the Heartless had gone. I scooped a bit of the cold fluff in my gloved hand and molded it softly into a ball.
"Brain," I said, and he started to turn around.
Just as a softly compressed lump of snow bounced off his puffer coat.
"Wha -?!" He pulled his hat down low over his eyes, and then suddenly fixed me with a smirk.
"Oh, is that what we're doing now?" He said, ducking down to gather snow.
I laughed, my mission a success. I dodged as he threw a snowball, though his aim really was terrible. I ran away, grinning, as he shouted me down, tossing more snowballs.
"I'll have my revenge!" He shouted dramatically. Snow hit the back of my head and sent an icy chill down my spine.
I let him catch up to me; he grabbed my arm and we both fell, giggling, into a pile on fluffy white ground.
Panting, I listened to the sound of Brain's giggles. Seemed like Mission: Cheer up Brain had been a success. I hadn't been sure if he'd be mad and just leave me behind, or actually enjoy himself. Thankfully, it had been the latter case.
"You have terrible aim," I pointed out.
He shrugged from where he lay on his back beside me. "Guess so," he agreed. He blinked and looked up at the sky. I followed his gaze but couldn't see anything except snow raining down on us.
"The Astral Plane..." he muttered. "Why does it have buildings and weather, like our world? What is this place?"
I sighed softly, but he didn't notice, deep in thought. It was this kind of thinking that I was trying to distract him from. It didn't work for long, though.
"We'll figure it out," I reassured him. My gloved hand found his in the snow, and I squeezed it. "We're a team."
He blinked and looked at me, eyes wide, then broke eye contact. After about a minute, he said, "Just like old times." There was a look in his eyes that I didn't like. It felt like he was keeping secrets from me, that there were things I didn't know. I had so many questions: about Brain and why I kept dreaming about him, about who I was and where I had come from, about how we both felt drawn to each other, and about this world in which we were both strangers.
I shivered and sat up, tapping him on the shoulder. "How about we head back and get out of the cold?" I asked. "I think we fought enough Heartless today."
That banished the strange look from his eyes, and he grinned. "I thought you'd never ask."
