Rodney shuffled a bit closer. Sitting alone together out on the snow bank had seemed like it would possibly be romantic at the time, but now, he was just cold. The tarp and blanket on the ground beneath them didn't help as much as he'd hoped. His thick arctic gear he could barely move in did little to inspire a date like atmosphere. He'd brought some coffee to help keep them warm, but he was loathe to bring his hands out from under the blankets covering their laps and expose his fingers to unscrew the thermos. But Rodney reminded himself, that this whole thing was his idea and did it anyway, grumbling and grunting the entire time it took him to pour two mugs of coffee.
John covering both their backs with the extra blanket he'd brought along, may have helped a little.
Both with coffees in hand, pressed together as close as possible, and covered with every blanket they could carry with them, John started softly counting down from ten.
Rodney joined him. “Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two...”
The fireworks started off in the distance and they had the perfect view.
John turned his head, their foreheads inadvertently touching, “Happy New Year.”
Neither of them turned away.
“Happy New Year.” Rodney was suddenly feeling a bit warmer. Maybe this date wasn't a disaster after all.
